I have a list of the best things to do in Amsterdam as well as a list of free things to do in Amsterdam, however I’m often just as happy sitting in a cafe, looking at the bizarre shaped buildings or being by the canals. As you may have guessed, the name of the city actually came from the Amstel river. Having said that, I hear Amstel and think of the Dutch beer, therefore a river of Amstel sounds unbelievable to me! When you think of canals, you think of Venice, Birmingham and Amsterdam. Well there are 165 canals in this city so it shouldn’t be a surprise. Also, don’t worry if you think you’ve eaten a special cake and you’re noticing the buildings slanting to the side, that’s intentional, they’re called the Dancing Houses, built for the Netherlands wealthy residents, however they were perched up with stilts which sunk into the swampy area below, leaving them slightly un-straight. The Dutch have a very relaxing way of life, a healthy diet, while a fair portion of the residents of Amsterdam also live on houseboats. There are approximately 2,500 of them floating on the canals, while they even have a houseboat museum. But nothing will make you giggle more than the Sex Museum.
